Quakers & Slavery: Equality with Caveats

  • Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join Jennifer Gray, ASMHPT’s Education & Museum Manager, for ‘Quakers & Slavery: Equality with Caveats’, a special VIRTUAL presentation with The Peale.

The lecture will discuss the complicated history between Quakers and the Black members of their community. When asked, most visitors to the Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia can quickly link the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) with abolition. However, support for abolition certainly varied between individuals, congregations, and geographic regions, and differences—sometimes stark—can be seen within these groups simultaneously. For generations, racial prejudice often prevailed alongside specific efforts to curb these injustices. “Quakers & Slavery: Equality with Caveats” will open a conversation about how Quakers during abolition interpreted the ideas of equality and equity in contrary ways.

This lecture is one of three sponsored by the Baltimore National Heritage Area and presented by The Peale. Additional lectures will be presented online on March 7 and April 25. All are presented for free. Catch up on past lectures on The Peale’s YouTube channel.

Eagles in the Historic District

  • Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Philadelphia Eagles are soaring to the Super Bowl, and America’s most historic square mile is offering visitors fun ways to celebrate the hometown team, and their namesake’s connection to our nation’s founding.

As the Philadelphia Eagles soar to Super Bowl LIX, you can spot 10 eagles roosting here in America’s most historic square mile. Stop by the Independence Visitor Center, Carpenters' Hall, National Constitution Center, Arch Street Meeting House, African American Museum in Philadelphia or the Betsy Ross House to pick up your scavenger hunt.

Hint: our hidden eagle is located outdoors on ASMH’s historic grounds, and may be roosting near our stars and stripes!
