Meeting Houses of Early Philadelphia
From the founding of Philadelphia to the construction of Arch Street Meeting House, there were approximately 10 meetinghouses built to serve the Quaker community of Philadelphia.
Why so many?
Meeting houses changed with the Quaker population as the city grew. Some buildings were expanded, others moved to better locations, and some were sold off to raise money to build new meeting houses.
